It is otherwise known as nitinol, it is a nickel titanium alloy and its actually the springs made from it that contract when carrying a current due to the increase in temperature. I think various internet stores sell the stuff but it wont be particularly cheap.
I am planning on entering Robocup this year in the robo rescue and
though that muscle wire(wire that contracts in length when current is
passed through it) would do a good job for the for the can grabber and
maybe the lifting mechanism. This would probably make it easier to
build (Richard also alerted me to the fact that is would be lighter).

So would anyone know where to get 'muscle' wire from relatively easily?
