Some experience a few years ago using HopeRF RFM95W (I think it was),
which uses SX1278 internally, at 915 MHz (λ= 328mm), with a trivial
raw-LoRa (LoRaw?) protocol.
About 450 m range
Tx: MIFA (meandering inverted-F antenna) PCB antenna about 500 mm
(1.5λ) above the groundRx: 1/4λ (~80 mm) whip with no real ground
plane, handheld about 1.5 m (5λ) above the groundSuburban environment:
St. Martin's school to a nearby house, no direct line of sight with a
few buildings in the way
About 100 m range
Tx and Rx: 1/4λ (~80 mm) whip with no real ground plane about 150 mm
(1/2λ) above the groundGrass/bush/open forest environment at Macleans
Island, trying to see how well it would work as link for a predator
sensor, no line of sight
At least 1.5 km range
Tx and Rx: 1/4 wave (~80 mm) whip on 600 x 600 mm aluminium sheet about
500 mm above the groundClear line of sight over Waimak river bed near
Macleans IslandTo see whether I could actually get >1 km range.Stopped
because I go bored walking down the river bed
The trick seemed to be proper antennas and clear line of sightI don't
remember the LoRa spreading parameters, etc, but we had a reasonable
data rate, not the very slowest.
