The 1278s look like an excellent choice for an improved link. Can you 
tell us a bit more about application, required distance, battery life 
(?) and terrain.

Getting a decent antenna each end is usually the key to a successful 
links. For 433.92MHz (?) a couple of single-band rubber-ducky antennas 
might work well, and are likely to be a hell of a lot better than the 
small spring-types.

You can also improve improve link-budget by dropping data-rate, and RX 
IF bandwidth.

I have only ever used NRF24L01s for indoor use, line of site, with 20m 
range.
