I've a ton of LM2596 DC buck converters that I'll throw one on if needed. Was hoping to keep the install clean though. Given it's cheap enough I think I'll throw it in place and watch the smoke rise.

Why don't you just put the 12V car supply through a 12V linear regulator first before feeding it into the board? Worst case you loose about 1V and don't get a regulated 12V to the board, but that's probably irrelevant. They do tend to need a couple of caps though, 7812 do.
