[chbot] Borrow Video8 player for transcoding

Hi Andrew,
Thanks for checking and responding to my message, the "powers up" part sounds promising because the two camcorders I've tried both fail badly in that department (The LCD powers up on both, but buttons do nothing and no motor movement whatsoever).
I've got the other bits for doing the analogue to digital conversion so I'd prefer to try playing the tapes in a borrowed unit rather than going to a shop who'll probably want a couple hundred dollars for doing it. If you're willing to lend it to me for a few days, I'd be happy to get you a nice bottle of port or some other beverage(s) of your choice?
I can come and pick it up and drop back off to you, once it's setup it shouldn't take very long as I don't think the tapes are full.
Please let me know if that suits.
Thank you,
Mike

Hi Michael,
I have a Sharp Viewcam VL-E40X. Manual for a similar model here:
https://www.manualslib.com/manual/489234/Sharp-Vl-E40s.html
I don't have any tapes, but the unit does have the logo "8" in a square box.
It powers up from a mains adapter, and has the AV pack (page 38) with video out and mono audio. The video system is PAL (yes, be my PAL).

Hi Michael
Try Photo & Video in Merivale Mall
I have good success from them in the past with old tech.

Hi all,
I'm looking to borrow a working player/camcorder for the Video8 / Hi8 video format for a few days. I've got 5 tapes with old family footage that I'd like to convert to digital movie files. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/8_mm_video_format shows what the tapes look like and some history.
Thank you,
Michael
