[chbot] Is there a GNU makefile guru out there?

I'm not a guru but have used it and other systems over the years

I'm seeing a huge wave of movement to cmake over the last few years, and it is much easier to use for cases like this, once you are through the initial fairly low learning curve, and it is much better at dealing with both build system and target variations
