I was going to suggest Jaycar, but alas they don't seem to sell it. They do
however sell Ammonium Persulfate (cat NC4258) which should work on brass.

If this is for nameplates where you're not etching-out whole islands of
material (as in PCB etching), you could try use a saturated table salt +
water solution and clip +ve power lead onto the nameplate and dangle the
other in the solution and put a several hundred mA through it which
shouldn't require high voltage (several volts-ish). Give the plates a good
soapy scrub and meths clean beforehand. I sometimes do this to pre/bulk
etch copper PCBs before moving on to more expensive etchant..
