The trick seems to be to layer acrylic sheets, etch them in the shape of
the digits, and put a bunch of WS2812B RGB LEDs behind them. The
difficulty would be to get the etching and even illumination right, but
they're selling the PCB (a bit steep though).
The big advantages would be low power, ease of use, and a choice of
digit colours...
