[chbot] Costs of custom PCBs just keeps dropping....

Hi Quentin,

The mate's last board (a ATmega-based EEPROM
programmer) came in 8 days, but I expect mine will take maybe 2 weeks -
I think he got lucky.

Quality is "perfectly adequate" for a cheap two
layer board - not works of precision art, but perfectly serviceable. I
put the 32-pin TFQP on with a bit too much paste (or maybe old paste),
and had to remove it, clean under it and put it back down. No pads were
harmed.

Be interesting to see how I get on with a 0.5mm pitch 10-pin
TSSOP packages when the new boards come. I wonder if the default HASL
finish might be a bit crude once you get into the smaller pitched
parts...

For me, the best thing for not lifting tracks is having two
irons (a good one for fine work, and an inexpensive one for
through-hole) so I can just pick passives up like rice with chopsticks -
no jumping an overly hot iron back and forth, trying to get enough heat
for both ends to melt at the same time.

This is my first attempt at
using the KiCAD "Hand solder" footprints for all the passives. The pads
are longer so you can actually get your tip to the solder, and the
quantity of solder is less critical. That should make any
experimentation a lot easier.

from order to delivery and what's the quality like? I've generally stuck
with OSHPark but I'm thinking about diversifying to one of the Chinese
manufacturers as I've got a project which needs larger numbers of
boards. My one experience with Seed was that the board was basically OK
as long as you didn't have to ever unsolder anything (the pads seemed to
lift very easily).

about $0.12 each for a 19x45 board. Wow! How can peope feed their family
with those prices?
