[chbot] 3D printing

Yes there certainly are additional fees and they often do add up to $120 or so alone, not counting the GST or duty portion. It depends on the method of shipping which may account for the variation in people's experiences.

Not paranoid, but as Volker says there are additional fees.
*Entry fees:
Once the threshold of $60 of duty and/or GST payable is reached, then a Customs import entry transaction fee (IETF) of NZ$29.26 (GST inclusive) is payable. Please note that the $60 threshold does not apply to tobacco and alcohol products. Entry fees are collected on these two regardless of the amount. A Ministry for Primary Industries biosecurity system entry levy (MPI Levy) of $19.98 (GST inclusive) is also collected by Customs. The total fees equal NZ$49.24 (GST inclusive)

I'd be happy to pay GST, but the extra fees would make it significantly more expensive.  If I'm just over $60 then I pay $110.  It would be quite vexing.

Why are you so paranoid about GST?

Hi Mark,
At $200 the Malyan M200 was on the edge of impulse buy, but I was very worried about exceeding the GST collection threshold.  At $150 I jumped.  The shipping was via DHL Express, and that was the cheapest option available.  I suppose if it was on Banggood the shipping would be free. :)
Monoprice, who re-sold the M200 under their own name are now offering a delta printer at the $150 price point:https://hackaday.com/2017/08/21/monoprice-mini-delta-review/
We do indeed live in interesting times.
I'm totally going to print something really cool, once I get some filament that is.

I had been holding off 3D printers ...

My concern was the time taking to construct and perfect the desired
object was going to just add another distraction and more unfinished
projects.

I then got an email from Erik Kettenburg  who was responsible for the
Digispark and several other boards since.

As a result I ordered the BuildOne Deluxe at $149 (less previous
contributor reward) which has the capability of 125 x 150 x125mm print
area.

It will arrive when it gets here, I have complete faith in Erik and
have been more than satisfied with his early product, approach,
solutions and ongoing support, and I expect this will be the same.

BTW shipping is only USD$25 to NZ.

It is interesting to see how when you go from prototype to production,
you run into issues, and the writeup about leadscrews is worth reading.

Hopefully in the new Year some time it should be available for demo.

In the meantime I should really work out some uses for it .....

You'll be surprised how many ideas you'll come up with.

only recently, I've done:

shopping bag clip for the car

mounting brackets for a led strip light

case for component tester

charging dock for smart watch

and several parts for the cocktail robot I'm finally getting around to.

and then there's thingiverse.com.

I have a few bits up on there under the username Section8

    Hello everyone,

My 3D printer arrived today.  Now I can hang with
the cool kids.

For the longest time I have coveted this:
    https://hobbyking.com/en_us/catalogsearch/result/index/?dir=desc&order=price&q=Malyan+m200

It is the Malyan M200, aka the Monoprice MP Select
Mini.  It was announced to great excitement just over a year ago as the
first actually decent 3D printer for less than 200 US dollars:
    https://hackaday.com/2016/06/13/review-monoprice-mp-select-mini-3d-printer/

So, for the price it's pretty good, all things
considered.  I was overseas when it was announced, and I didn't want to
try and get one delivered to me there, nor did I want to carry it back
to NZ when I eventually returned.

I kept my eye on it at hobbyking, and another eye
on the exchange rate.  As you know, GST is not collected on imports if
the GST amount is less than NZD 60, which equates to a shipment value
of NZD 400 including shipping.  Unfortunately, if you exceed this
threshold you get some other fees tacked on too, approximately an
additional hundred dollars.

The shipping cost from Hong Kong is about USD 65,
so all up it's right on the edge of being slightly over the limit,
depending on the exchange rate.

Lately the NZD has been quite strong so it was
quite likely I would not be over the limit, but it's marginal.

Last week I spotted it was on sale with about USD
50 discount.  I bought one on Friday and it arrived today.  At least if
you're paying that much for shipping you actually get good service.  I
bought the UK version to be sure it was capable of 240V operation, but
I think all models are the same, just with a different figure-8 mains
cable supplied.

Out of the box you get five metres of PLA and a
microSD card with a sample model (and the manual) on it.  They supply a
small Allen key for you to check the bed is level, after which you load
the filament and press print.

Now I have joined the horde of 3D printer owners
with no real need for one... but it's cool.

    Best wishes,

    Andrew
