Not nearly as deadly though...

Simple. Use a non-earthed soldering iron tip and connect it with high
resistance (500kohm?) to circuit and workspace ground for ESD
protection. This takes the tip out of the circuit electrically (OK, RF,
yadda) so you don't blow things up. Shorting 2 pins with the tip is an
entirely different matter.
