Thanks for the replies. Everyone had a different solution!  So it's not a 
common fault, however that gave a lot of options to try.

For the first time ever, it crashed while working on it. This did look like 
a memory fault as the 7 segment displays were full of garbage. It either 
freezes or displays garbage.

That made me wonder if I have a RAM problem. The RAM is 6116 and 6264 chips. 
I suppose I have nothing  to loose in changing these and they do appear to 
still be available.
