sounds like about 5W of drive, and the DC test should catch any 
significant inbalance.

Could you put a scope across the resistor to check symmetry (or two 
probes and subtract, if it is floating)

How many volts AC out of the transformer, off load ?

What markings are there on the solenoid ?
