I use this USB+serial GPS receiver from Deal Extreme for $35US

The same device appears to be sold and supported here:

You can connect as many apps as you like using gpsd.
I think Kelvin mentioned that his modules have a 3.3v serial NMEA interface
and cost $20NZ
